For the person organising the trip

Business travel internet: choose a connection for the work.

Email between meetings, maps after landing and a video call from a hotel have different data and reliability needs. Start with the itinerary, the applications and the terms of the existing mobile plan.

  • Compare roaming, eSIM and Wi-Fi
  • Prepare phones and laptops
  • Allow for itinerary changes

This guide helps you plan a journey. If you arrange connectivity for several people, combine it with the portal guide and a company purchasing policy.

Check the current plan before buying another

An additional eSIM may be unnecessary where your operator already includes sufficient roaming data. The EU/EEA has roam-like-at-home arrangements, but check the applicable data allowance and fair-use conditions. Unlimited domestic data does not necessarily mean an identical allowance abroad.

For other destinations, such as Turkey, Switzerland or the United Kingdom, read your own tariff rather than assuming a specific charge. Your operator may include an add-on or individual terms. Compare the data needed for the complete trip, not just a headline price per gigabyte.

Three ways to get connected
OptionWhen it is usefulWhat to check
Existing SIM roamingYour contract covers the destination with enough data.Foreign allowance, extra charges, add-on validity and what happens when data runs out.
Travel eSIMYou want a separate package with a defined purchase cost.Device support, coverage, data amount, validity, activation and hotspot conditions.
Wi-FiA suitable connection is available at an office, hotel or venue.Availability, sign-in requirements, IT policy and a fallback outside the building.

Map the complete route and the moments that matter

Include the airport transfer, stopover, out-of-town customer visit and any border crossings. A country package does not become regional when the traveller crosses a border. For regional products, check the actual country list instead of relying on labels such as Europe or Asia.

If you need data immediately after arrival, prepare the profile and instructions in advance where the product permits it. Keep hotel details, booking references and important contacts offline as well. They remain useful when airport Wi-Fi requires registration or the first mobile connection takes longer than expected.

Estimate the tasks that use data

Maps and short messages create a different workload from long video meetings, inspection photographs or large repository synchronisation. Check the device’s usage history or measure your own applications. There is no universal daily gigabyte allowance that suits every employee.

A hotspot adds laptop traffic to the package. System updates, backups and cloud synchronisation can run without an open browser. Limit unnecessary background tasks in line with IT policy and download large files beforehand where appropriate.

For an important meeting, allow spare data and an alternative connection. Two eSIMs can use the same local network; simply having two profiles does not establish independent redundancy.

Set up the two lines deliberately

A compatible device can keep the usual number active while using a travel eSIM for data. Select the intended mobile-data line and check automatic switching settings. Standard calls and SMS on the existing number remain subject to that operator’s terms.

Do not assume that a data package includes a phone number, SMS or conventional calling. Internet messaging applications and mobile voice service are different things. Check whether company sign-in depends on SMS arriving on the number you intend to keep active.

Have a plan for a connection problem

Start by checking the selected data line, the package’s roaming instructions, its coverage and current service status. Downloading or installing a profile requires another working connection. Avoid deleting the eSIM before establishing whether it can be installed again.

Coverage inside halls, basements or industrial sites can differ from coverage in a city centre. For work that depends on a stable connection, agree suitable Wi-Fi or another fallback with the customer. A travel package is not a guaranteed link for critical infrastructure.

Prepare the purchase and its record separately

Confirm the package recipient and whether the purchase should be business or personal. Review the order and service conditions before departure. Afterwards, an administrator can find the expense by employee and date and download the relevant records.

For recurring travel, use a repeatable process: collect needs, confirm devices, set purchase limits and review expenditure. The B2B portal supports that workflow without giving the entire team one shared password.

Questions before you decide

Is an eSIM always cheaper than roaming?

No. Compare your contract, destination, data requirements and total trip cost. Some journeys are already adequately covered by the existing plan.

Do I need a new eSIM at every border?

That depends on the product. A regional package can cover multiple countries, but each required destination must be included in its coverage.

Will a VPN improve coverage?

A VPN does not provide a radio connection. You first need working internet, and company VPN and application requirements need to be checked separately.

Am I connected as soon as I pay?

Purchase, fulfilment, installation and connection to a local network are separate stages. Allow time for each and follow the package instructions.
